Extension
§15-1-2.1.43 “Pharmacy technician trainee” means registered supportive personnel currently engaged in a pharmacy technician training program which has been approved by the Board and who is under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
Per Rule §15-7-4.4(f) and (g) If the pharmacy technician trainee fails to complete the required training program and hours within the 15-month period; or fails to successfully pass the ExCPT or PTCE national certification examination to obtain certification as a CPhT and register as a PT within 90 days from the date of graduation from the competency-based pharmacy technician education and training program of a learning institution or training center, or the date of the certification of completion of the training program by the pharmacist-in-charge ,then the pharmacy technician trainee must cease working in the pharmacy immediately. However, the rule provides that the Board may, upon approval of a petition to the Board by a pharmacy technician trainee, provide an extension of time, or permit a pharmacy technician trainee to begin a training program again with no credit given for any previous hours.
Individuals eligible for a Pharmacy Technician Trainee Request for Extension must meet the following requirements:

Currently registered as a pharmacy technician trainee

Actively working towards acquiring a pharmacy technician registration

Pharmacist in Charge must approve request and provide necessary information/support
Requests must be complete. Completion includes the following:

Personal information
-
Employer information
-
Selection of which part applicant failed to complete
-
Selection of what type of extension applicant is requesting
-
Justification or reasoning for failure to complete

Amount of time being requested

PIC-If failure to complete required hours, proof of hours completed must be attached

PIC-If failure to successfully pass the national exam within 90 days of completing hours then information/support for retraining program must be attached
If submitting extension request for the first-time requests can be processed in office and a decision letter will be mailed out to the applicant and employer.
If applicant has previously requested an extension of time or previously started over with no credit given for previously earned hours, then the request must be brought before the full Board at the next scheduled Board Meeting. Board meetings are held quarterly. Once the Board has reviewed the request a decision letter will be mailed out to the applicant and employer.
Applicants are not permitted to work in the pharmacy after their current expiration date. If extension is approved, it will begin on the current expiration date.
